I am taking to the blogosphere as a place to publish comments and thoughts on what is happening here in Wisconsin, where I live and teach. Huge changes are afoot in our state and elsewhere, and many of us struggle to stay afloat and figure out how to fight for what we believe in. I am inspired by friends and colleagues who publish their words on blogs, and I’ve decided to follow their example.
The blog is named after Atlas of a Difficult World, one of my favorite books, by the late poet Adrienne Rich. In the poem the book is named after, Rich holds out hope that language can be what unites and inspires us across space and time, in spite of vast difficulties and differences. I hope this blog does a little bit of the work towards honoring and continuing that work.
